Extract IV
When he saw another armoured man approaching him with a drawn sword, he turned and said, “What is this, Reginald? I have given you many benefits, and you come to me armed in the church?” By these words, does not the imitator of Christ seem to resemble Christ when he said to the Jews, “You are come out, as it were to a robber, with swords and clubs to apprehend me?” [Mt 26:55]. The knight, filled with furious rage, said to him, “You will know soon. You are a dead man.”
The Quadrilogus compiler utilized other authors to supply more details regarding the last words spoken by Becket and a description of the knights’ first blow. Edward Grim and William of Canterbury said that Reginald Fitz-Urse struck Becket first, while William FitzStephen said it was William de Tracy.
