Extract III
When the man of God could have turned away from that hour of death if he had wished, the aforenamed knights came into the monastery, some calling out, “Where is that traitor?” and others, “Where is the archbishop?” The saint, in his spirit knowing all things that should come upon him [Jn 18:4] met them on the steps, some of which he had already ascended,1 That is, the steps going up from the northwest transept into the choir. and with no fear on his face he said, “Here I am, no traitor, but an archbishop,” so imitating the Lord when he went to meet the Jews seeking him, saying, I am he [Jn 18:5]. The first of them approached and said to the saint, “Flee, you are a dead man!” But the saint said, “I certainly will not flee.” The sacrilegious knight laid his hand on him and knocked off his cap with the tip of his sword. “Come this way,” he said, “you are a prisoner.” But the saint said, “I will not come. You will do to me here what you wish to do,” and he shook off his hand from the hem of his cloak.
