Place Names

With regards to places, I have always adopted that name which will be most familiar to a non-specialist Anglophone reader. I have thus used the common English names of major Italian cities (Venice, Naples, Florence, and so on) rather than their Italian names, as well as names such as Aleppo for the Syrian city of Halep. I have used Izmir rather than Smyrna for the same reason. I have used Livorno rather than Leghorn: certain older names are no longer as familiar to the generalist Anglophone reader.
