Abbreviations
The documents pertaining to cases heard by the Consoli del Mare di Pisa (Consuls of the Sea in Pisa) are bound in numbered registers housed in the Pisan State Archive. Within each register, the cases are numbered and generally arranged in chronological order. Each case (except in the early part of the century when the registers are less well-organised) is bound within a title page, giving the names of the litigants and the date of the judgement. Some registers have a contemporary index, but there is no modern overarching index of cases, and I have included the date of the judgement in brackets when referencing each case in order that it might be securely identified.
All documents pertaining to the case were nested inside one another before being folded and bound into the register. In order to make reference to specific documents within a given case, I have appended a brief descriptive name of the document to each archival reference where appropriate.
The archival references thus follow the format: archive – archival series – subseries – register number – case number – (date of judgement) – name of document.
