Acknowledgements

This book began as a workshop at Ghent University in June 2018 funded by the FWO Comparative Rural History Network (CORN) and was developed in a set of parallel sessions at the European Rural History (EURHO) Conference in Paris in 2019. Chapter drafts were discussed at workshop organised as part of Jane Whittle’s European Research Council Advanced grant ‘Forms of Labour’ originally planned for Exeter in May 2020 but held online due to the pandemic. We would like to thank all the participants of those workshops and conference panels, along with the anonymous reviewers for Boydell Press, for their enthusiastic and critical comments.
