Note on Conventions

All translations in this work are by the author, unless otherwise indicated. The spelling of Old Norse texts follows that of the respective editions and has not been normalised. Skaldic quotations are sourced from the Skaldic Poetry in the Scandinavian Middle Ages edited volumes, unless otherwise stated. Eddic quotations are taken from Eddukvæði (ed. Jónas Kristjánsson and Vésteinn Ólason), unless otherwise noted. Quotations from Snorra Edda are from Anthony Faulkes’ editions, unless otherwise specified. Editors of sagas are cited only in the first reference to each saga, with full references provided in the bibliography. Many of the primary texts cited in this work are included in the abbreviations list; for these texts, full references are provided in the bibliography.
