Listen, Discuss, and Pitch a Large Tent
Ellen Gruenbaum
Although female genital cutting (FGC) practices have been studied extensively in the last fifty years and efforts to end it have escalated, we are far from finished with research on this topic. This is not only because the practices change over time and scholarship asks new questions, but also because there are conflicting goals, difficulties in delineating the subject, and disagreements on applying ethical principles. The new scholarship offered here highlights that complexity, while also offering useful ideas for rethinking research agendas on FGC practices in Africa and the diaspora.
