The Politics of Anticipation in East Africa’s Rangelands
1 This chapter was written with the support of the PASTRES programme (www.pastres.org) which was funded by an Advanced Grant by the European Research Council (74032). Work in Ethiopia was led by Masresha Taye (see Taye 2023) and in Kenya by Tahira Shariff Mohamed (see Mohamed 2023). The chapter was originally submitted to the editors in October 2020, while this PhD work was on-going. Since that time, two great theses have been completed (Mohamed 2022, Taye 2022) and we have published a joint paper exploring similar themes in more depth together with Leigh Johnson (see Johnson et al. 2023). In Ethiopia we would like to thank many people who provided information for this research. Community members, local insurance mobilisers and staff at ILRI provided enormous support; and in Kenya we would like to thank all the respondents who took their precious time to participate in our study. Additionally, we appreciate reviews of earlier drafts by Michael Bollig, Detlef Muller-Mahn and an anonymous reviewer for the publisher. We would also like to thank John Hall for preparing the map.Ian Scoones, Tahira Shariff Mohamed, and Masresha Taye
