Conclusion
The proliferation of peace agreements in Greater Gogrial since 2005 has not proliferated peace and occurred alongside a rise in violence. The hakuma has demonstrated its god-like power by demanding peace including via displays of physical or potential violence. These demands for peace are also violent to the extent that they are arbitrary; they have broken with previous norms of peace and entrenched notions of peace that are negotiated, and not judicial, and are, therefore, at the behest of the hakuma. In this cosmic politics of the hakuma, divine authorities have continued to play a significant role in providing protection and challenging the hakuma’s ability to kill with impunity. For example, MABIORDIT is a divine power that protects its holders from bullets and, therefore, from the government’s power to kill itself. Peace agreements have repeatedly been used by the hakuma to try to delegitimise MABIORDIT and to legitimise lethal violence with impunity against those seized by MABIORDIT. In this way, these peace meetings have become entangled in the cosmic politics of the region, and enact a vision of peace that is deeply and deadly violent.
