Notes on References to Doctor Faustus
For reasons that are explained in Chapter 2, “What Edition of Doctor Faustus Should I Buy?,” all page references in this book refer to the John E. Woods translation published by Vintage, followed by a second page number for the German edition in the pagination of the Große kommentierte Frankfurter Ausgabe (GKFA), published by S. Fischer Verlag.
Chapter numbers from Doctor Faustus are indicated by Roman numerals throughout the text. While these are more cumbersome than Arabic numbers, Mann chose the Roman numbering deliberately, since it serves an estranging effect and mirrors the formatting of the sixteenth-century chapbook.
