This chapter considers the adaptation of Hesse’s novel Narziß und Goldmund (Narcissus and Goldmund, 1930) by Austrian, Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Stefan Ruzowitzky. The action-filled costume drama premiered on March 2, 2020, in Berlin’s Zoo Palast cinema; only a few days after its release across Germany and Austria on March 12 and 13, respectively, cinemas were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following pages will introduce and discuss the film in the context of previous Hesse adaptations and in view of the source text, while considering recent trends affecting adaptations of German-language literature in neoliberal economies.
